Why do we have expectations?
An expectation is something that is expected.

The major cause of expectations is promises made to us. We will always be filled with expectations, during the period of waiting for the fulfillment thereof, which sometimes caused us anxieties.

Whenever we committed an act of service either to ourselves, or to another, we usually expect a reward. A common example is when we till a land and plant crops, we usually expect a harvest, which often caused us a lot of anxieties!

Another cause of expectations is when we think we know someone very well and can predict such a one. Whenever the person does anything, we might assumed to be able to know the extent, which we often used phrases like “just what I expected”, or “he/she has fallen short of my expectation”.
This too, like the promises, can cause anxiety to the expecting party, very common in football fans during a match.

Expectations can cause serious problems for us in the form of anxiety, which is known to be a deadly psychological situation that leads to so many poor health conditions.

In order to avoid being a victim of expectations and induced anxiety, it is always important for us to;
1. If someone made a promise to you, while waiting for the fulfilment, first ask yourself if you are worthy of that promise, then search yourself to find out if at any point in your life you have done an act of benevolence to the person you are expecting from. If you haven’t, then do not dwell your mind upon the promise, forget it the moment it is made and whenever it gets fulfilled, then consider it a debt!
If on the other hand you have shared from your substance in the past with the person you are expecting from, do not dwell on your past kindness as an asset, see it as an ordinary philanthropic activity done for the sake of Providence!
2. Whenever you find yourself doing an act of service, either willingly or not, do it with an open mind without any expectations, regarding the act (unmindful of the outcome), as one of the natural purpose for your existence. When you do this, because you are not expecting anything from the service rendered, the end result will be more than what you would have expected!
3. Do not ever try to predict a human being no matter how much you think you know the person, because human beings are dynamic creatures, known only by their creator, the only One capable of predicting them.

When you do the three above, you will never have to worry about expecting from anyone/anything, but your personality will become an expectation to others! You will live a happy, simple and free life!

  1. I love your post.
    Have you read Srimad Bhagavat Gita? If not, I would suggest you to kindly read and understand it. Alternatively, you may also read Devdutt Patnaik’s My Gita. Or, see YouTube videos. Hope that helps.
